    The Art of the Potter

Mrs. Janet Rodriquez, ceramic artist and Nolan Catholic parent gave a mesmerizing performance as she revealed the secrets of the "art of the potter".

Janet was invited to demonstrate techniques of throwing on the wheel by Moira McCarthy, the art teacher at NCHS, on Thursday, January 27 in the art studio.

As Janet fashioned two vessels in each presentation, the students learned the necessity of mastering "centering" and "collaring." From the two basic forms of cylinder and bowl, they witnessed the transformation to more complex forms and the personalizing techniques that has made Janet's business so successful. Mrs. Rodriguez was once Nolan Catholic's campus minister and Christian Ministry director. She left in the early 80s to found Hart Street Pottery. In addition to unique art pieces and housewares, Janet has served the Church making crosses, Eucharistic vessels, baptismal fonts and earthenware pitchers and bowls for the Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday celebrations. Visit the NCHS main office to see her talent, our cross symbolizing the religious institutions that have served Nolan Catholic High School.

Thank you to Mrs. Rodriguez for sharing her love of pottery in the service of God's people.

    NCHS Signs Covenant with Marianists

On Jan. 21, 2005, Nolan Catholic High School signed a covenant with the Society of Mary (Marianists) formalizing the school's alliance.

"This Marianist Sponsorship Document more closely bonds the relationship of Nolan Catholic High School with the Marianists towards a shared mission," said Father Larry Doersching, SM.

The agreement binds both parties to certain requirements of Marianist sponsorship and promotes working together in a spirit of trust and cooperation.

The document was signed by Father Larry Doersching, president of Nolan Catholic High School, Pat Svacina, Chairperson of the NCHS board, Don Miller, superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Ft. Worth, and Brother John Habjan of the Marianists' Office of Education.

The vision of a school in the Marianist tradition is to help educators find Christ in the students whose education is entrusted to them. The Marianists, administrators, faculty and staff look to Mary as the model of how to carry out this mission - the fostering of growth in Christ in communities of faith.

The Marianists promote these five "Characteristics of a Marianist Education" to provide the framework for reflection and action for the realization of the Marianist vision of education:

  • An education for formation in faith
  • An integral and quality education
  • An education in family spirit
  • An education for service, justice and peace
  • An education for adaptation and change
