Algebra Meets Physics
|
|
On Friday, January 23 Mr. Mark von Rosenberg's
Algebra I & Mrs. Cathy Buckingham's Algebra I Honors
classes conducted Galileo Lab Experiments in Dr. Robert
Scheer's physics lab. Through the lab, distance vs. time
of a rolling metal ball, the students created and
analyzed a linear set of experimentally generated data.
Mrs. Buckingham said, "We are trying to help
the students understand the connections between
subject areas. By using the same equations from
today's algebra I classes that the students will use in
physics next year, we are reinforcing the cross-
curricular development of math & science." Next year,
the students will expand on the very same physics lab
by applying what they learned in their math class.

Hartnett Arena Naming Ceremony
|
|
The picture at right is of Sr. Marguerite Connors, SHSp,
Superintendent of Schools, as she read the
dedication: "On behalf of the Diocese of Ft. Worth, I
would like to thank you, Mr. [Stephen] Hartnett, for
your generous support of Nolan Catholic High School.
And it is an honor for me to declare, on behalf of the
Bishop Delaney and the entire Nolan Catholic
community, that from this night forward, this arena will
be known as the 'Hartnett Arena', named to honor of
Richard V. and Catherine Hartnett."
Stephen Hartnett is an NCHS alum from the class of
1968. His wish was to honor his parents, Richard and
Catherine, through the naming of the arena "in
gratitude for their love and support of their children and
grandchildren."
As a special surprise to Mr. Hartnett, NCHS president
Rev. Larry Doersching, S.M. invited members of
Stephen's 1968 basketball team to join in the
ceremony. Several teammates attended including the
team's coach, Mr. John Friday.

Heroic Faustino |
|
|
How can the simple life of a typical
teenager be the
makings of a saint?
Faustino Perez-Manglano
was born
in Valencia, Spain, on August 4, 1946. He was a
student at Our Lady of the Pillar School from age six
until he died from Hodgkin's disease while in high school
at the age 16.
He loved soccer, swimming, nature, the movies, and
novels - and Christ and Mary even more! He is "heroic"
because he went out of his way to serve and help
others even when it meant sacrifice on his part. His
desire to become a Marianist missionary in Latin
America was thwarted due to Hodgkin's disease. Now
he is a missionary from heaven. Today the "Faustino
Movement" has captured the imaginations of people
young and old who wish to see Faustino become a saint.
The North American Center for Marianist
Studies (NACMS) has published a book entitled, "Maybe
God Will Speak to Me" by Jose Maria Salaverri, S.M.
Last semester, four NCHS students, James
Balandran, Aaron
Bartholomew, Arianne Henderson, and Mike Perkins
along with NACMS intern Joyce Detzel, (pictured
above)
developed a website for the promotion of
this book. The website includes research into the
history of Faustino, the steps for canonization, a page
for lesson plans the teachers can use for cross-
curricular studies, and other pages of interest
According to one of the students, "we
hope to spread who Faustino was, what he did, and
why he should become a saint. We want to show that
sainthood should not be limited to only adults."
Visit the student-developed Faustino website
through the link below.
