Link Crew ~ 250 incoming freshmen students attended Nolan Catholic’s first-ever
Link Crew Orientation on August 8, 2005, two days before the first day of freshmen classes. Coordinated by Ms. Lisa Miles and assisted by Ms. Colleen Lawler, the program focuses on helping students transition from middle school into high school. Students are placed into “crews” with 9-10 other freshmen. These crews are led by two upperclassmen who will keep in contact with the individual freshmen and the entire crew throughout the year. The Orientation consisted of activities designed to break down barriers, help students make lasting connections within their crews, and prepare students for the beginning of high school. "Based upon student and teacher comments after the first two weeks of school, this program has been a huge success! Thank you to all of the link leaders for working so hard at helping make the freshman student's first few weeks positive." ~ Ms. Lisa Miles
Leading the way ~ Seniors Andrew Houk, Eric Meyer, Jon Moore, and Robert Sparks attended the Southwest Leadership Conference held at Texas Wesleyan University in June. They were hand-picked to become leaders in all aspects of their lives. The program emphasized leadership as "getting the right things done the right way."

The masters of math ~ Do you understand the meaning of the derivative in terms of a rate of change and local linear approximation and can you use derivatives to solve a variety of problems? No? Well after a year with AP Calculus teacher, Mr. Wei Shih, our students do. His AP students posted some impressive scores on last year’s exams:
Calculus AB/BC - 16 students scored 5’s (extremely well qualified) & 3 students scored 4’s (well qualified) out of 20 students. According to 2004 grade distributions on collegeboard.com, only 20.4 % scored 5’s on the Calc. AB exam and 50.3 % score 5’s on the Calc. BC exam.
This is becoming a pattern of success for Mr. Shih’s students. In 2003, 18 out of 20 of Mr. Shih’s AP students scored 4’s and 5’s on the two exams. Congratulations to the grads and to Mr. Shih for his dedication and talent. Congratulations to the Math department for developing a program that makes this success possible. Kudos to Mrs. Anna Hicks and Mrs. Cheryl Moddrell, for laying the strong mathematics foundation.

Planned Giving
~ A bequest is one of the simplest ways to make a charitable gift; however, statistics tell us that only 4 out of 10 Americans across all age groups have current wills. Do you have a will...a current will? Have you remembered NCHS in your will?

Nolan Catholic Junior High Program in its final two years
|
|
|
|
One of the characteristics of a Marianist Education is to educate for adaptation and change. We have an opportunity to demonstrate our adaptability and willingness to understand the need for change: Nolan Catholic will soon make a public announcement regarding the Junior High Program’s closure. We want to take this opportunity to inform you first of the reasoning, time-line, and plan for this two-year phase out.
Following the recommendation from a joint committee of the Diocesan School Advisory Council and the Nolan Catholic High School Board, the late Bishop Joseph Delaney decided in mid-June, 2005 that the NCHS Junior High (7th & 8th grades) will be phased out during the next two years.
The Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Donald Miller, formed the advisory committee in the fall of 2004. After several meetings, the committee recommended to Bishop Delaney a phase out of the NCHS Junior High. The bishop concurred with the committee’s recommendation.
The 2005-2006 school year will be the last year for the 7th grade; 2006-2007 will be the last year for 8th grade. In late May, 2007, a celebration will take place to mark the conclusion of this part of NCHS’ history, with particular honor being paid to the late Sister Paul O’Reilly, SSMN, who was the Junior High Principal for over 20 years.
