Quiz-A-Priest ~ On Thursday, Oct. 21, the
President of NCHS, Fr. Larry, completed this year's
round of meeting every single 7th and 9th grader.
This is his fourth year to meet students in their
religion classes. During the four-year span, he has
met over 2,000 students.
Fr. Larry said of this year's encounters, "as
always, I am amazed at the diversity of the students,
their many gifts and talents, and their varied
interests."
One by one each student stood up, shook
his hand, and told him something special about
themselves. He then discussed the value in having
an "attitude of gratitude," before taking questions
from his audience for the
Quiz-A-Priest
portion of the
talk. Students were given the opportunity to ask Fr.
Larry, a priest of 31 years, any question they've been
waiting to address to a man of the cloth.
A couple of questions from the
Quiz-A-
Priest:
Q
- How did you decide to become a priest?
A - "God's decision, not mine...I just followed
my soul."
Q
- What's the worst experience as a priest?
A - "Prejudice against priests without
knowing them."
So today's lesson boys and girls,
priests are people too!

Germany in nation-wide contest
Goethe-Institut "Award of Excellence"
contest
This year, the students at Nolan Catholic High
School will join more than 80,000 students from some
1,000 high schools in the US and Canada to compete
for an all-expense-paid trip to Germany for a summer
language course - whether they study German or
not.
Bruce Horn, a teacher of German at NCHS is
organizing the competition for the school. The entire
student body is eligible to participate in the contest -
a chance to win the grand prize, to learn more about
the interconnected nature of a global society and to
bring recognition to the school.
The students will watch an English-language video
covering a slice of German life followed by a quiz. The
video, "German High - We Know What Malina Did Last
Summer," opens the window into the life of a German
high school, its students and their activities, seen
through the eyes of Malina, a typical North American
high school student.

Nolan Catholic Cross Country
~ The boys
continued their strong season with a 3rd place finish
at the TAPPS state meet. All year long, they
competed with the bigger classifications and finished
in 4th place or better. At the McNeil Invitational
they competed against some of the best in the state
and finished in 10th place. They ended up winning
the District 1-6A Championhsip. Even though they
came up a bit short at the state meet, both Andrew
Montes and Nick Flaherty finished their high school
careers with a top 10 finish. Andrew dominated the
field with a near best performance of 16:03. Nick
finished 9th overall. Justin Stradley had a strong top
4 finish with a 16:54. Andrew Robinson finished in
13th place. Other finishers include Nick Coates
(18:38, 35th place), Matt Coffer (18:45, 40th place),
and Aaron Sanchez (19:14, 49th place).
On the girls side, they had their best performance of
the year. For the first time in the last 4 years, the
girls finished in the top 4 and came
home with an award. They ended up in 4th place.
Led by seniors Katherine Henshied (12:57, 10th
place) and Elizabeth Eder (13:36, 26th place) and
captain Callie Baker (15:05, 71st place), they were
helped by the outstanding efforts of four freshman.
Jaquelyn Batson (13:21, 19th place), Hannah
Robinson (13:55, 34th place), Amy Coates ( 14:08,
41st place), and Alli Tillemans (14:04, 42nd place).
We are looking forward to next year in both boys and

Stephen Breen | 1988-2004 |

To The Nolan Catholic Community,
On behalf of our son, Stephen Breen, we would like to
express our heartfelt thanks for the overwhelming
support, love, care, and concern that was given to
us during the 16 months Stephen was sick with
cancer, and ultimately when he passed away on
October 4th. The staff and faculty went out of their
way to accommodate the many needs Stephen and
we had. And, many parents in the community helped
us in countless ways throughout this journey.
However, it is the students of Nolan Catholic we
would especially like to thank.
The students of Nolan Catholic were models of
Christianity in welcoming, befriending, and supporting
Stephen through his struggle with cancer. Many
students visited him in the hospital, many more
emailed, IM'd, or called him, and all prayed for his
recovery. The concern of the Nolan Catholic
students for Stephen culminated in a vast outpouring
of support in the past few weeks since his passing.
Several of Stephen's closest friends were at our
house when Stephen passed away and many more
wanted to be there. Hundreds of students attended
the visitation, rosary, and funeral for Stephen. A
special tribute to Stephen was made by the football
team, which came to the funeral dressed in their
game jerseys and then created a corridor from the
church to the hearse for Stephen's casket to pass
through. The students dedicated the football game
against Bishop Lynch to Stephen and at halftime his
classmates laid flowers and lit candles at the NC logo
on the hill, which was truly a touching gesture. On
Friday the 15th, the Junior Class Council sponsored
a "Hats Off To Stephen" day in which for $2, anyone
could wear a baseball cap, a Stephen trademark, to
school. The money raised was donated to "The
Stephen Breen Memorial Foundation." Lastly, on
Monday the 18th, a combination
Homecoming/Memorial Mass was held in the arena. A
banner for Stephen, made and signed by the
students, was presented to us. In addition, a mime,
symbolizing Stephen's death and new life, was
performed by several faculty members and students,
which was incredibly poignant and very moving.
In all, throughout Stephen's illness and especially in
his passing, the NCHS community, through its
collective actions and deeds, displayed the essence
of Christianity, which we all strive for. I wish all of
you could experience the incredible outpouring of
faith that we have over the past 16 months, and you
would be as proud as we are of our collective
friendships and the community of Nolan Catholic,
which we have built.
May God bless you as He has blessed us with your
friendship.

a Mailbox Near You!
EIE Annual Fund off to strong start
The NCHS Excellence in Education Annual Fund is off
to a strong start. To date, over $20,000 has been
raised through the School Board and Faculty/Staff
campaigns, with the School Board already reaching
100% participation.
The Parent and Alumni campaigns will soon be kicking
off. Watch your mail for information regarding the
importance of 100% participation. The size of your
gift is not as important as the need for you to give
something.
The EIE Annual Fund is the primary community wide
fund raiser to make up the difference between tuition
and the actual cost of operating the school. Money
raised directly effects faculty and staff salaries and
benefits, tuition assistance, facility enhancements
and day to day maintenance and operating.
Please give, and light the path to success for our
students. You are the foundation!
