Greetings,
Welcome
to the Viking e-Trumpet, your monthly e-mail NCHS information source.
This issue is pretty long. You don't have to read it all at once,
but it's a good idea to go through it to get all of the informaition.
Do you have a story idea? Let me know
and with enough lead time, your information and
photos can be included in future issues.
Do you know of any new parents or friends who have
yet to sign-up for this free e-newsletter? Forward
them this e-mail so they too can get this monthly
newsletter and other important campus
announcements. Also, if you would like a printed

Journey of Hope
~ On Wednesday, October
19, the “Journey of Hope” made an appearance at a
school assembly at NCHS. Juniors and seniors
attended the hour-long assembly where the visiting
members of the group made a lasting impression on
students, staff, and faculty.
Journey of Hope is a non-profit organization led by
murder victim family members who speak to various
audiences in order to educate and address
alternatives to the death penalty.
Journey “storytellers” come from all walks of life and
represent the full spectrum of faith, color, and
economic situation. They know first hand the
aftermath of the insanity and horror of murder. With
compelling voices, they retell their stories of personal
tragedy and share their struggles to heal. Journey of
Hope members choose love over revenge and
compassion for all humanity. Forgiveness is seen as
strength and the way to healing.
Fine Arts Tour
~ The Fine Arts Department
at NCHS will be going on the road Thursday,
December 1 for a Fine Arts Tour day. The Band will
visit Holy Family, St. George's and St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton. The Dance Company will go out to Immaculate
Conception in Denton, then back to Holy Family and
Our Lady of Victory. The Choir will begin with St.
Andrew's, then on to Saint Maria Goretti, St. Rita and
Holy Rosary. Fine Arts events will culminate with a
Fine Arts Assembly during the day on December 9th
at NCHS and a Band and Choir concert that night at
7:00pm in the Hartnett Arena.
Eagle Scout additions
~ After last month's
issue of the e-Trumpet, a few e-mails came in asking
that we update the list of Eagle Scouts at NCHS.
We've since learned that four more students have
earned the rank of Eagle, Michael Shields, Justin
Veltman, Joe Kilianski and Matt Hegeman. Both
Kilianski and Hegeman have also earned their Catholic
Religious medals. Fewer than 1% of Scouts
accomplish this feat. If there are others please let us
know.
2nd Annual National Honor Society Gift-wrapping
Service Project
~ Dec. 10th from 10-3 pm in the
Commons. Bring unwrapped gifts with tags attached
detailing who they are to/from. The service is free,
but donations will go to the Tarrant County Food
Bank and help pay for some officers to go to the
National Convention next year. Gifts can be dropped
off and picked up later, or you can enjoy the bake
sale goodies. We have a ton of wrapping
paper/tags/ribbons and are quite talented, so bring
as many gifts as possible and get your wrapping done
early this year!
Junior High Drama
~ The Junior High proudly
presents Annie Jr.
Tuesday, Dec. 6 and
Wednesday Dec. 7 at 7:00 p.m. both nights. Plenty
of great seats still available! Bring the kids! Faculty
and staff may sign up for reservations in the lounge.
Free admission!
Project Graduation "Phoneraiser"
~ Have you
brought your old cell phones to NCHS yet? If not,
now is a good time to make room for the new phones
that Santa Claus might be bringing. Please send your
phones to the main office or dean's office where
recycle boxes are located. This is a great way to get
them out of your hands and keep them from littering
the environment.

Internet Safety
|
|
|

Keeping your kids safe on the Web
With
all of the information on the Internet these days, it is
hard to keep up with what is out there. One of the
recent trends, especially among teenagers, is
called “Blogging” (short for Web Logging). Blogging is
a type of web diary where students go to express
their thoughts and feelings, connect with friends,
and “vent.” Many websites offer places where
students can get free websites and blogs. Some of
the most popular sites are myspace.com, xanga.com,
and livejournal.com. These sites also allow students
to post pictures of themselves. Some students even
post where they go to school, their home address,
and their cell phone number.
Although your student may think this is all innocent
and fun, you must remember that anyone with
access to a computer has the potential to access
these sites, including people with bad intentions.
That is why it is crucial that you monitor what your
students are posting on the internet. Students should
never post personal information about themselves.
They should not post where they go to school, their
first or last names, or even their home town.
Predators can use this information to track them
down or lure them into bad situations.
What Can You Do?
Here are some tips from
the Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use:
Talk with your student
about appropriate
Internet activities, responsible communications and
values like modesty and kindness.
Remain engaged in your student’s online
activities.
You are the parent! It is your
responsibility to know what your student is doing
online.
Keep the computer in a public place in your
house,
not your student’s bedroom. Periodically
check what your child is doing. Limit access when
you are not present. Review files or install monitoring
software.
Emphasize the public, permanent and
transmittable nature of online
communications.
Limit Internet access for younger children to e-
mails and instant messages with friends and to Web
sites that you have reviewed.
Expand access for
teens, but only under conditions where they are held
accountable. Install monitoring software, but use it
only if you have a reasonable suspicion of misuse.
Help your students maintain a balance in
their activities.
Computers should be used in
proportion to time spent in person with friends and
family, as well as reading, exercising and studying.
