Come See What We're All About
Nolan Catholic High School offers three levels of theater arts courses:
Theater Arts I: Learn basic stage techniques from pantomime, improvisation, blocking, theater history, voice and diction, and characterization. Student projects include writing scripts, monologues, scene work and the production and performance of a group scene.
Grade: 9-12 Prerequisite: None One Semester
Theater Arts II: This course is designed for students who have completed Theater Arts I. Areas of advanced study include theater history, characterization using the Stanislavski Method, contemporary scene studies, acting exercises, script writing, and basic directing.
Grade: 9-12 Prerequisite: Theater I One Semester
Theater Arts III: This class is performance oriented and designed to showcase a talented troupe of actors through competition, one-act rehearsal and production, student directed plays, traveling pieces and a more in-depth study of contemporary theater and Stanislavski’s Method. Membership of the International Thespian Society is encouraged and attendance of the State Thespian convention is required.
This class is by departmental approval only.
Note: Students who intend to take a Fine Art for more than one year will most likely need to attend summer school to make room in their schedules. See your counselor for details.
Theatre Nolan produces two main stage performances each year – a stage-play in the fall and a musical in the spring. Show information can be found in the News link of the Theatre Department home page once it has been released. The spring musical is entered into the Betty Lynn Buckley Awards, a program which honors excellence in musical theater in Tarrant County.
Students may audition for performance roles or chose to enlist as a member of the technical crew. Opportunities in the tech crew include stage management, lighting, sound, costumes, make-up, set construction and design, and more. Pervious experience in theater is not required for either performance roles or crew positions and newcomers are encouraged to join.
Participation in theater productions earns students points towards induction into the Nolan Catholic chapter of the International Thespian Society (Troup # 5367). Though induction is not required, it is strongly encouraged. The International Thespian Society (ITS) is sponsored by the Educational Theater Association and offers students exposure into the larger world of theater. For more information on this organization, please read below.
Nolan Catholic High School is part of the International Thespian Society (Troup #5367), a program which offers students exposure into the larger world of theater. Induction into the Thespian Society occurs only after a student has earned enough points (accrued by working on theater productions) and has paid the required membership dues.
Inducted thespians have an opportunity to participate or compete annually at the ITS state convention. Here students may compete in a variety of events, attend several workshops, and see numerous performances from schools around the state. Students who qualify at the state level are invited to perform at the ITS international convention, held each summer in Lincoln, NE.
