Team Meetings
and Practice Schedules

Team meetings and practices are held in Room B4 immediately after school. Team practices are held every Monday and Wednesday. Team meetings are held on the first and third Monday of each month before practice begins. Practices and meetings are rescheduled as needed for holidays, short days and other irregular school schedule days.

Are you interested in dramatic interpretation, duet acting, duo interpretation, humorous interpretation, prose, poetry, debate or student congress? Would you like to know more about these competitive events? Do you want to improve your public speaking skills? Do you want to add something to your transcript that will REALLY catch the attention of COLLEGE ADMISSIONS COUNSELORS?

If your answer is yes to any of these questions, come to our next team meeting or practice. Meet with members of the team; NCHS's new Speech & Debate coach, attorney Doug Cortes; and our amazing and invaluable assistant coach par excellence Mr. Chuck Lutz. Practice schedules can be flexible and may be tailored to suit your needs.

Nolan Catholic High School has a rich tradition of competing in National Forensic League Speech & Debate tournaments. In 2008-09, both a class and after-school program will be offered.

Senior Salvador Espino, Jr., to Compete at National Speech & Debate Tournament
in Las Vegas

Congratulations to Senior Sal Espino who placed second in Senate at the 2008 Lone Star District Tournament Student Congress Competition on
April 5.

Sal earned a seat at the Desert Lights National Speech & Debate Tournament June 15-20, 2008,
in Las Vegas Nevada.

Mock Trial Team Selected to State Competition

Nolan Catholic Mock Trial Team was selected to
compete at the Texas Mock Trial Competition in Dallas March 7-8.

The team consists of: Sal Espino, Jessica Chung, Jennifer Dayrit, Wevine Nwaefulu, Madeline Ross, Juliana Garcia, Patricia Trevino and John Cortes II.

There will be four preliminary rounds – three on Friday and one on Saturday morning – which will be followed by an awards ceremony and lunch at the Dallas Bar Association. After lunch there will be 2 elimination rounds - semifinals and finals - to decide who will go to the National Championship in Delaware in May.

Find out first hand what it's really like to argue a case in court by joining the Nolan Catholic Mock Trial team. For more information, contact Speech & Debate coach Doug Cortes, who is an attorney and practices in state and federal courts in Fort Worth, Dallas and elsewhere in the United States.

The deadline is sign up is noon on Friday, Nov. 30. All grades may participate. Preference will be given to those who respond first, so act quickly.

Speech & Debate Tournament Results

On Dec. 7 & 8, the Nolan Catholic High School Speech & Debate Team competed in the 2007 Coppell Cowboy Classic Speech & Debate Competition. Congratulations to the following team members who brought back trophies and awards:

Junior Jessica Chung: Quarterfinalist & 15th overall in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate;

Senior Sal Espino: Super Congress finalist & 6th overall in Student Congress, also awarded a gavel for being selected as a Presiding Officer;

Junior Angela Ferreira: Second Place overall in the Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate competition.

Congratulations also to Senior Lauren Lutz who competed in Poetry Interpretation and placed 19th overall in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate, and to Freshman John Cortes II who competed in Original Oratory.

On Nov. 16 & 17, the Nolan Catholic High School Speech & Debate Team competed at the 2007 Williams High School Tournament in Plano, Texas. Congratulations to the following members who "broke" out of the preliminary rounds:

Senior Sal Espino – Super Congress finalist in Student Congress
Junior Susan Matassa – semifinalist in Poetry
Junior Jennifer Dayrit –- octofinalist in Lincoln Douglas Debate.

Congratulations also to Junior Cindy Le who competed in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate and Junior Angela Ferriera who competed in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate.

Nov. 2 and 3, the Nolan Catholic High School Speech and Debate team competed in the 2007 University of North Texas High School Speech & Debate Tournament in Denton. Thirty schools were represented at the UNT tournament this year.

Junior Angela Ferreira won First Place as Best Speaker and Second Place overall in the Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate competition.

Congratulations also go to Junior Jessica Chung who made a strong showing and placed 18th overall in the Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate competition.

The Speech & Debate team competes next in the 27th annual HockaDebate Invitational, which will be held at the Hockaday School in Dallas on November 9-10. This consistently proves to be one of the most competitive events in the region each year and we are very excited to be participating.

Participating this year are: Seniors Salvador Espino, and Lauren Lutz, and Juniors Jessica Chung, Jennifer Dayrit, Cindy Le and Susan Matassa.


NCHS Speech & Debate Team are members of the National Forensic League (NFL), a speech and debate honor society, and the Texas Forensic Association (TFA), the state organization for speech and debate competition.
