Foreign Language

Standard Diploma:
Nolan Catholic requires two consecutive years of high school level study within the same foreign language for a standard diploma. Foreign Language credits earned in the eighth grade do not satisfy any requirement for a regular diploma.

Honors Diploma: Nolan Catholic requires three consecutive years of study within the same foreign language for an honors diploma. Foreign Language credits earned in the eighth grade to qualify as one of three years of study for an Honors diploma. In addition, Foreign Language courses, at the third year level and beyond, are considered Honors Courses.
Nolan Catholic strongly recommends that students take a minimum of three years of Foreign Language in preparation for college

600 - Latin I
Latin I takes the student through a traditional grammar-translation approach to the mastery of Latin grammar and sentence structure. There is extensive reading in Latin with many written exercises, from Latin to English as well as from English to Latin. English vocabulary is improved through the study of Latin derivatives as new Latin words are studied.
Grade: 9-12 All Year

602 - Latin II
Latin II follows the same procedure as in first year Latin with grammar review and translation at the beginning of the course, followed by extensive reading in the latter part. The course goal centers around reading works from famous Latin authors in the original Latin.

603 – Advanced Latin - Honors
This course is designed for the advanced student and may be taken consecutively over three years as Latin III, IV & V. Extensive reading and translation utilizing different Latin authors are the focus of each segment of the course. Grammatical review is included.

609 - Spanish I
This course is offered to the student who has no previous experience in the Spanish language. Spanish I is designed to develop basic communication skills in Spanish through the study of dialogues, grammar, and practical vocabulary. Also included is an overview of Hispanic culture.

612 - Spanish I - Accelerated
Spanish I Acc is designed to cover listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at a greater
level of comprehension. This course is recommended for those with native-speaking ability and for those whose previous study of Spanish has
already brought them to a certain level of proficiency. This is not an Honors course.
Grade: 9-12 All Year
Prerequisite: Departmental Approval Credit: 1

615 - Spanish II
Spanish II begins with a review of Spanish I. It resumes the development of communication skills through the introduction of more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary in dialogue form. Oral and written competencies are stressed.

620 – Spanish II Honors
Spanish II Honors is designed for students with a level of proficiency that enables them to proceed at a faster pace and at a greater level of comprehension. The course is more detailed in content than regular Spanish II and includes advanced listening, speaking, reading, and written skills.

622 - Spanish II Accelerated
Spanish II Accelerated is designed for students with a level of proficiency that enables them to proceed at a faster pace and at a greater level of comprehension. The course is more detailed in content than regular Spanish II and includes advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. This is not an Honors course.

625 - Spanish III - Honors
This advanced course strengthens listening, reading comprehension, and effective writing skills. A higher degree of accuracy and consistency is
obtained through grammatical review, which occurs textually throughout the year. Selected readings deepen the students’ understanding of both language and culture. This course grooms students for advanced study of Spanish.

630 - Spanish IV - Advanced Placement
Grammar and Composition
This college level course stresses oral, compositional writing, and reading comprehension skills. Accuracy and fluency in all areas are emphasized. Grammatical review punctuates the topics. Successful completion of this course prepares the student for the AP Grammar and Composition exam.

635 - Spanish V - Advanced Placement
This course is the second part of the Advanced Placement Spanish program, covering the literature of the Hispanic world. This course is a survey of Spanish and Latin American literature beginning with the Golden Age in Spain. Thematic, philosophical, and stylistic issues are examined. Grammatical review is ongoing. Spanish is the mode of communication in the class. All literature read is in the target language. Successful completion of this course prepares the student for the AP Spanish Literature Exam and university level courses.

640- French I
In first year French students will develop proficiency in the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in cultural context. Basic vocabulary and grammatical structures and an introduction to the French-speaking world are stressed.

In second year French students will continue to develop proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening within a cultural context. Grammar is more advanced, and oral and written expression is
developed through guided written compositions and oral interviews.

650 - French III - Honors
This course consists of study of advanced grammar, French culture, and development of written and oral proficiency. Reading comprehension and written composition are
developed within the context of current affairs, social issues, and an introduction to classical French literature.

655 - French IV - Honors
Written and oral comprehension and expression of French language is further developed within the Context of a survey of the classical literature history, art, and music of France and other French speaking countries.
