Inclement Weather Closing Information
EMERGENCY CLOSING INSTRUCTIONS
(Jan. 24, 2008)
The weather forecasters are predicting a wintry mix for tomorrow morning and I want to take a moment to review the procedures for such an event.
HOW IS THE DECISION MADE?
• The Principal, Academic Dean, and the Director of School Services
are in consultation around 5 a.m. on the morning of an expected winter weather
emergency. If possible, Mr. Nelson will have traveled to the school to evaluate
the local highway conditions in the immediate area of the school.
• The Principal and Academic Dean will be watching the early morning
news to evaluate what the local public school districts are doing. The local
districts will have scouts on the road reporting conditions to the superintendent
so that a decision concerning the safety of the students can be made.
• Based upon the reports of local public school closings and/or delays,
Nolan Catholic High School will make its decision.
• Clearly, if Fort Worth ISD closes due to a weather emergency, Nolan
Catholic High School will be closed.
There are three options:
NOLAN CATHOLIC IS RUNNING A REGULAR SCHEDULE
• School will start at 7:45 A.M.
• For safety, follow the instructions of your local public school district.
If the local ISD where you reside delays the start of school for 2 hours,
students attending NCHS from that public school district may arrive at NCHS
two hours later. If the district closes because of weather, the students from
that particular public school district are excused from classes here at NCHS.
NOLAN CATHOLIC IS CLOSED
• The school and offices are closed.
• Please check the website later in the day concerning the status of
competitions and practices.
NOLAN CATHOLIC IS DELAYED TWO HOURS
• If we post a delay, please stay at home and wait. Delays
can turn into closings depending upon the changing weather conditions. For
example, if the weather forecasters expect the temperatures to rise significantly
by 8:30, a delay will be called to allow the roads to improve. If this does
not materialize, the delay may be turned into a cancellation.
• The school building will open at 9 a.m. We cannot accept students
earlier because we need to allow time for our faculty to arrive in order to
provide supervision.
• Classes will start at 9:45 a.m.
We try to have the announcements to the TV stations no later than 6:15 a.m. Some of the stations accept the cancellations electronically, so there is little delay in the posting. Others take longer since they require human contact. The first two phone calls made are to the person that calls the media and to one of the computer experts here at school. It is our expectation that weather emergency information will be on the web site immediately and for those of you with EDLINE accounts, you should receive an email.
Please do not call the school for information since our staff will not be available due to the weather. We will be using the web site to convey any updates.
The winter weather make-up day will be announced on the web site as soon as the administration meets to select between the two listed on the calendar.
As we discovered last year, this process works wonderfully when a weather
emergency is taking place. It does not work if we need to close for another
reason like a water main break or loss of power. The media are not prepared
to handle school closings for other reasons. We are working on a plan to handle
these types of emergencies and will convey that to you as soon as it is complete.
Thank you.
Stephen Hiner
NCHS Principal
The closing
of school due to inclement weather is the decision of the Principal and the
Dean of Student Affairs. The decision to cancel school will be made
as early as possible and the radio and TV stations listed below will be notified.
They, in turn, will announce the closure. Please do NOT call
the NCHS School Office, the Brothers' Residence, or Teachers for such information.
If students are already in school and inclement weather arrives, the Principal
in consultation with the Administrative Team will decide if there will be
an early dismissal. Nolan Catholic students come from all areas of the metroplex.
Weather and road conditions can vary greatly from area to area. As a result,
you, as parents, are the final decision makers regarding your son/daughter's
attendance. Please notify the Dean's office if your son/daughter will not
be in school or should be dismissed early due to weather conditions.
In the event of inclement weather Nolan Catholic High School will announce school closing on:
