2010-11 Academic Course Guide

The 2010-11 Course Guide

(as of June 22, 2010)

2010-11 Universal Reading Book Selected

Following the predominantly positive feedback on the 2009-10 Universal Reading title (Same Kind as Different as Me), Twelve Mighty Orphans is another title that is close to home. It is a very inspiring book that reflects, in a true-to-life form, many of the characteristics of our Marianist tradition.

As we read the book, let us all be mindful that the purpose of this exercise is to use this avenue of reading one book to build and strengthen our one community.

NCHS' Guidelines for Student Accommodations

Nolan Catholic High School strives to identify students’ unique needs, especially those that will affect their classroom performance. Although we do not write Individualized Education Plans, nor provide formal special education services, we do recognize the responsibility to provide accommodations to ensure that students with disabilities have the opportunity to obtain a Nolan Catholic High School diploma. In order for a student to receive classroom accommodations the following information is reviewed to determine the student’s individual needs:

•    A formal evaluation or documentation of a disability within the past three years.

•    Demonstration of an educational need for accommodations whereas the disability “substantially limits” (based on Section 504 of Americans with Disabilities Act) and/or prevents the student to progress and/or demonstrate mastery of skills.  Determination of an educational need may include the following:

o    Review of student history and/or accommodations proven necessary for student’s progress in the past
and/or

o    Teacher input and observation of the student’s progress over a four week period

o    Supporting evidence that the student needs the accommodations in order to meet minimum course requirements

Special considerations for extended time on tests include each of the following:

•    Review of test scores, including placement tests, course tests, and other pertinent information

•    Teacher input and observations indicate that the student requires more time than his or her peers to complete tests

•    Student cannot pass a test or demonstrate mastery without extended time

•    Amount of extended time is to be left to the discretion of the student’s individual teachers

•    Extended time in honors or AP classes is generally not considered unless the teacher provides the time for all students in the class

Accommodation Procedure
 1.  A Request for Review of Student Accommodations form is completed and returned to the guidance office. (Form is available in the Guidance office)

2. Counselor sends request to learning specialist. A period of a minimum of four weeks is necessary for observation and to collect information.  A committee made up of the Assistant Principal of Academics, guidance counselor, teacher representative, and learning specialist will convene to determine whether instructional accommodations are warranted.

3.  If Instructional Accommodations are granted, the form will be distributed to the student’s teachers.

4.  Accommodations are reviewed at the beginning of each school year to determine if they are successful and/or need to be continued or revised.
